The
Playa del Carmen area sits on top of
a vast system of underground rivers,
which are accessible through cenotes,
or sinkholes, where the ground has fallen
away, revealing the cool, fresh water
underneath. Over the centuries,
the rivers have worn away at the limestone
shelf creating an awesome array of limestone
formations, stalactites and stalagmites
that are a real sight to see.
Many tours will take you to swim or
snorkel in these cenotes, where you
can see these formations above and below
the water. Cenotes are
unique to Playa del Carmen and the Riviera
Maya - the area has over 3,000 of them!
Our tours take you to some of the best.
