ECOTOURISM & BIRDWATCHING

The Riviera Maya is a beautiful, wild place, with many wonderful ecological attractions - wildlife, birds, tropical jungles, fauna, and much more.  The Playa del Carmen area boasts a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Sian Kaan, a United Nations Important Wetland in Rio Lagartos, and is the site of the largest whale shark migration in the world.  Here you will find over 375 species of birds, huge flocks of flamingos, manatees, dolphins, jaguars and many other wildlife species.  Many of our tours focus on sustainable tourism, and these are some of our birdwatching and ecotours in the Riviera.

ECOTOURS AND ECOTOURISM IN PLAYA FAQ's

Q: I'M ON A CRUISE SHIP - CAN I DO THESE TOURS?
A: Unfortunately, all of these tours are too long for a cruise shore excursion.

Q: WHICH TOURS ARE BEST FOR BIRDWATCHING OR BIRDING?
A: Sian Ka'an and Rio Lagartos are both incredible for bird watching.  Over 375 species of birds can be found here, and these tours take you there.

Q: WILL I NEED BIODEGRADABLE SUNSCREEN FOR THESE TOURS?
A:  Only biodegradable, reef-friendly sunscreen is allowed.  For even more eco-friendly sun protection, we recommend a polypro t-shirt.

Q: WHAT IS SUSTAINABLE TOURISM?
A: In Playa del Carmen, a movement is afoot toward sustainable tourism.  This buzzword means that the tour embraces the natural environment and culture, and builds tourism around the amazing things that the area has, rather than building it over the top of it.  It embraces Mayan culture and involves them and their villages in the tourism, while bringing employment to the Mayas, rather than displacing them to make way for attractions.  This is a hot concept, and many of the tours we sell embrace this idea.
